What You Can Do To Protect Your Family
Give your family a 50% advantage with smoke detectors: Have at least one smoke detector on every floor, including the basement.
Keep smoke detector connected.
Change batteries when you change clocks in the spring and fall. Even if the warning device for weak batteries has not sounded. Test detectors every month when you pay the phone bill and when you return from a vacation.
Buy a multi-purpose fire extinguisher (ABC) for every level of your home.
But use it only on a small fire.
To Prevent Fires
If there are smokers in your home., every night before you go to bed, check for ashes behind cushions, and under a couch or easy chair that could smolder and suddenly catch fire.
Clean lint out of the clothes dryer filter after each load. Vent the dryer outside and have it on its own outlet.

Replace the cover plates on electric sockets with childproof ones.
Run electrical cords along baseboard, keep them off the floor when possible.
Install carbon monoxide detectors --if you use either gas or oil heat, have an attached garage, or use a fireplace or wood stove to protect your family.
