Baby Safety Answers!

Q: "How much should a baby be fed," a new dad asks?

A: Babies need about 3 ounces of formula for every pound weight each day. So a 6-pound baby will drink about 18 ounces of formula in a 24-hour period. When the baby is able to finish 3 ounces completely, add another half ounce to each bottle so that you stay a little ahead of the baby’s appetite. Eventually, your baby will take 8 ounces at each feeding.

  • Feed a newborn baby every 2 to 4 hours. Infants may be very unpredictable in their feeding habits because their digestive systems are not yet mature.
  • Throw out unfinished milk in the bottle. If your baby starts a bottle, but does not finish it, throw it away. Bacteria can build up in the remaining milk and make your baby sick.
